The chart shows that the benefits of GS1 standards come as well into effect at internal branch operations. Preparing banknote processing, banknote packaging and internal transport are mostly supported by GS1 standards. Some central banks report about project activities in this sector to integrate GS1 standards in their internal branch processes.

It is noticeable that the use of message types is still an exemption. Only two of nine participating central banks report the use of message types. The planning of further use is not apparent.

The numeric system is widely used at internal branch operations. Especially GLN, GTIN and SSCC are mostly in use in the preparation of banknote processing, banknote packaging and internal transport. The barcode technology is common use. Uniquely identification at any point and the enabling of tracking the banknote/coin containers are the main advantages.

The GIAI is not used by any of the participating central banks, as it is primarily used to identify individual assets and liabilities.
