Cash operations with customers GS1 Standards at NCBs

While conducting cash operations with their customers, central banks offer an assortment of business cases that are supported by GS1 standards. Hereby improvements in cash processes take place.

The chart clearly demonstrates that the core business cases of central banks as lodgements and withdrawals are carried out with the usage of GS1 standards. Mainly, tracking and tracing messages are used like delivery notifications, confirmations of receipt or final reports. Additional services are still in their early stages to be performed by GS1 standards. Customer Master Data is so far the only service that is not yet supported by GS1 standards by any of the participating central banks.

In order to transmit the various messages and business documents reliably, the participating central banks use EANCOM and different versions of the message type GS1 XML, with XML 2.5 being the most commonly used.

NCBs use a wide range of identifiers. The identifications keys GLN, GTIN, SSCC and barcode technology are most used. Especially in the tracking process, they identify professional cash handlers, banknote and coin packaging units as well as cash containers. Their relevance for the cash cycle is highly proven.
